advertising space...
I have uploaded my finished posters and think that a smaller A4 or A5 version would fit in a magazine; depending on how big the advertising space is and how much it costs. For smaller adverts, the poster or the digi-pak could be shown, as the visualisation image is quite easily recognisable and this helps to promote the products / band even more.
Also which magazines the posters / CD is advertised in will be popular with the target audience and also be promoted through word of mouth or internet sites the target audience would uses e.g. facebook or YouTube.

poster feedback...
- Eye catching.
- Intriguing design.
- Draws you in.
- The poster with the band's logo is better.
- Quite dynamic - shows movement.
- Fits the teenage target audience.
finished posters...
These are my finished posters to promote the band and digi-pak. I have been told through feedback that they are eye-catching, which is the effect I wanted. I thought that being eye-catching would help them appeal to my target audience - teenagers. I think that the consumers eye would be drawn to the centre of the visualization, first and then see the band's logo surrounding the centre. Because of the visualization, people's eyes then follow to the rest of the information. The band's website address is also very clear so people might remember it and find out more about the band. The style of the poster may also suggest the music / band is abstract and non-mainstream and the colour scheme (purple) could to appeal to both genders. I think that the visualization will be quite a memorable picture to associate the band with, so they will be remembered and the eye and title 'seeing lights' also links to the band's name 'vision'.
Video feedback...
- Interesting, mysterious
- Catchy tune
- Want to see what happens - suspense / gripping
- Clever use of flashing images
- Good effects on top logo
- The music would appeal to a teenage target audience
finished digi-pak feedback...
- The digi-pak looks really good.
- You can see a clear theme between all the products.
- The products look quite professional.
- I like the colours together, it's quite unique.
- I liked the firework thing (visualisation).
- Eye catching.
- Matches the theme of the video - brings it alive.

digi-pak final ideas...
On the digi-pak covers the eye is drawn to the band name and CD title as they are the brightest colours and on top of the other layers. The middle of the eye is also eye-catching and leads to the band's logo.
The band's name and track list is the main focus on the back of the digi-pak. Then the eye would see the bar code and copyright information, as they contrast being white on a dark background, but people may ignore them as are more for stores selling the product and the rights of the companies involved.

info...
Someone who fed back from my storyboard suggested an idea than included one of my shots for a CD cover/poster. This idea has led me to produce some variations on the original CD covers/poster I created. I will upload them when they're finished on Corel. Adding the 'open me' shot to the CD cover/posters will increase the synergy of the products to match the video.

info...
I now need to get more feedback on the changes I have made to my video. I think I have sorted out the problem of the clips keeping some of their sounds, so that the track is the only thing heard. I have also changed my video from my storyboard to fit the music better. I have also used a lot of effects in my video so add to the idea of it being quite abstract. This idea matches my products (digi-pak/posters).

target audience...
My music video I think would match the target of teenagers, but probably not mainstream as the video and track are quite abstract. The design of my products to promote the video/band would probably appeal to them more; as I think they look quite original and different, which may catch people's eye, even if they have never heard of the band or their songs. Also the track doesn't have lyrics, but other tracks on the album may have - which would appeal to a wider audience.

feedback...
After some feedback on my video I have continued to edit it.
I have improved the pace even more to match the music.
I also had feedback that said I needed more varied shots in the piano scene, so I edited them to include a close up and a different angled shot. As editing this part set the shots out of time with the music I re-edited the timing to match the beat.
Other feedback suggested that I had used to many flashes in one sequence, so I edited out some flashed and kept the main flashes on the beat that worked best with the music.
I also had feedback saying that parts of my video with quite repetitive. To change this I edited out some shots and replaced them with shots I had filmed but never used, this increased the shot variation. Although some of my video is meant to be repetitive I didn't want it to be too much. Even though my video repeats some of the same shots to go backwards at the end, I didn't repeat all of the same shots and they're not in exactly the same order - but they look like they're the same as the start but going backwards although they're not.

digi-pak ideas...
Using a sample digi-pak design I created one for my band's CD. It uses synergy by following the theme of the visualization and space, it also uses the bands logo on the CD and the same fonts and colours as the other related products.
I also created a variation on the back covers as I thought this idea works better.
I will add feedback on what other people thought.

I am also going to create some variations of my posters and CD covers and ask for ideas for the target audience of my video.

Visualizations...
These were my initial ideas for the visualizations on my CD / poster. I created them by playing the track I created, through itunes and showing the visualizations. I tried different settings and print screened the ones I thought looked good. I especially chose the circular shaped pictures (2 on the far right) as they matched the idea I had to put the visualization in an eye. I felt that this also matched the idea of the music and the band's name being 'Vision'.

info...
I have now just about finished the editing of my video. I have matched the timing of the piano shots so they look in time with the music. I will show my video to more people now it's closer to finished and get their feedback. I am also going to work more on my posters by adding a web address, as if it was for a real band. I am also going to upload some of my previous pictures that I picked the final visualizations from, to show how I made them.

video feedback...
I have showed my video to another media student and asked for feedback.
She liked my video but agreed that I need to fix the middle part's editing on the beat (piano part) This has worked out as the most difficult thing to get right in the video because when I change the editing to fix the middle part it changes the timing for my shots at the start, so I have to keep editing the whole video all over again.
Positive feedback points:
- Shots and ideas match the music and themes
- The shot pace is now faster, and keeps up with the music
- She liked the idea of the ending (going backwards)
Negative points:
- Needs to be edited to the beat better
- some parts need to be 'tidied up' to fit with the flow of the video.
I will take these points into account as I continue editing.

Today (Fri) after school I am going to get some feedback on my video, although the editing isn't finished.
I will post up the feedback and change the video if necessary.

Info...
I am still in the process of editing my video. To fit the end of my video to the music I need to extend my video's length. To add more shots I am testing how it looks to add shots of the cd cover, to include more synergy.

CD covers/inside/poster feedback...
- "I liked the purple visualization with the logo in the eye the best"
- "Also the matching poster"
- "I liked the way the logo looks on the CD"
- "I like how the logo is adapted into everything"
- "I think the purple visualization is more colourful than the other one"
Most people I asked liked the purple visualization the most, and either the CD cover with the purple visualization or that with the logo in the eye. People liked the way all the pieces are visually linked, including with the back cover with the bigger logo.

Editing...
I started to edit my video and need to re-shoot the shots that were too dark so that they look clearer in the video. As the green screen also didn't work with the angle I wanted. I will re-shoot those shots without green screen, so that they look more realistic.

Filming...
I have started my filming and have hopefully filmed the majority of the shots for my video. When I filmed on the Thursday after school, it got dark very quickly (as it's winter) so my shots may be too dark for the video and I may have to re-shoot some of them. Friday's filming went well as it was inside.
This means my filming will be extended.

Filming...
I am planning to start filming on Thursday 19th November. On this day I plan to film the street and park parts of the storyboard. On Friday 20th of November I plan to finish filming with the corridor / practice room shots. This should conclude my filming and it all should be completed whithin the 2 days.
Risk Assessment...
The filming for my video is very low risk.
Risks:
Risks:
- Filming in the street (on a pavement / driveway on a quiet street)
- Tripping or slipping in the field

GarageBand...
As we only could only use copyright free music for our videos I researched various websites with unsigned artists. However I couldn't really find a track I liked or one that gave me an idea for a video. As I had used Apple's GarageBand the previous year to make a thriller opening soundtrack, I decided that making a track might work better. So I started using GarageBand and adding music to mix a track. Hearing hoe it sounded also gave me an idea for a video. Although I didn't add on any vocals, I still added a piano part that could be mimed in the video instead of lip-sync. Also, as I made the track I know and can see where and when the different instruments are going to come in. This allows me to edit my video not only on the beat, but also to different instruments and their cues.My track overall is about 3 minutes (as most tracks I saw were about this long or more). Also as my music seems quite abstract I think it will compliment the style of the video and its connotations.
Updated Storyboard...

On this version I have added some ideas and also the timings to the track. I have not drawn it shot by shot as the ideas may change slightly depending on technical aspects (e.g. how well the green screen works) and if I think of anything better that could go in, then I can add it in. Overall my music video will follow this idea, even if some aspects change.

CD / Posters Sketches...
Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo X2...
This is the package I used for my CD covers and posters, as well as using some of Microsoft PowerPoint 2007.I downloaded the free trial of this Corel package and used it for all my work. This allowed me to layer images, cleanly remove backgrounds and edit images to create the design and style that I thought would work for each piece.
CD back covers...

These are my cover designs for the back of my CD.
- The first design (top left) is in a simple black and grey colour and uses the band logo again, with the track list in the middle.
- The next 2 (top middle and bottom left) are the same design but with the different visualizations and the track list is in slightly different coloured purple boxes. The track list fonts are also in different colours matching the visualization colours. I also tried embossing the fonts so that they looked like they were etched into the box, instead of just pasted on. These 2 also designed in the same style as the posters to add to the synergy, with the logo in the top left corner, slightly angled and the matched visualization.
- (top right and bottom right) These are similar to the previous 2, but with the logo in a different style. This time the logo is bigger in the background and is placed on the left. I think that these 2 look better and continue the synergy with the CD cover and posters, but the difference in the design also makes it original for the back of the CD.

Fonts...

These are some of the fonts that I tried for the band name and the poster fonts. In the end I decided to choose the top left one which appears on the CD cover and the posters. The font is 'Amienne' which i've never used before but I think it looks good and seems to suit the name. I also used size 72 as it needed to fill most of its box. I chose to use a lilac/purple as it matches the visualizations I chose for the CD and posters.
Posters...

These are the posters I designed for the promotion of the band's album.
- (top left) is the band logo, band name and the text that the new album is out.
- (top middle) is the same as 1 but with the different visualization.
- (top right) is the same as 1 but with the CD picture (with no logo in the eye) and with a different colour for the text at the bottom.
- (bottom left) is the same as 3 but with the CD cover matching the visualization in the background (no logo in the eye).
- (bottom middle) is the same as 4 but with the logo in the eye, on the CD cover.
- (bottom right) is the same as 3 but with the logo in the eye.

logo...
This is the idea for my band's logo. It is based on 2 'V's in a circle. To add to the synergy the logo will appear on the CD and also the poster. I may also figure out a way of featuring the logo in the video too.
original images for CD cover / posters...

These are the original images that re-appear in all of the promotional work for the band. There is the eye that I changed into black and white and the 2 visualizations that I used in the iris. The band's logo is also there and the band's main title logo. Also the fonts/colours I tried for my posters.

Variations on the CD cover...

These ideas are based on the same eye to match the band name - 'vision' and also the idea of visualizations. They are different in the way that 2 are plain with different visualizations and 2 are the same but with the band logo over the visualization. There is only one (top left) that has the band name in the purple box with back font, as I decided to change the font and also the colour to white to look clearer. I also made the purple box lighter and I think the font is softer and suits the picture well.

Album Cover...

This is a possible idea for the album cover. I have named the band 'vision' which links to the mysterious sound of the song and also the link with the picture of the eye which will also reflect shots in the video. The name also has various meanings. I have put a visualization in the centre of the eye. This reflects the music and also the visualizations that some computer music player show (like itunes). The name of the band is in the bottom right hand corner in a purple box. The purple has turned out darker on here than how I created it.

Storyboard Feedback...
- "Its a clever and quite original idea"
- "It's an abstract video to match the abstract track"
- "Shots seem fast paced like the music"
- "The track seems too long for the storyboard, so you might need more shots"
- "The music builds tension and the quick shots help that too"
My Track Feedback...
- "It was very good but did seem a bit long, without a video"
- "The music was very varied, so it kept your attention"
- "I liked the way it was layered, so sometimes it had one instrument and sometimes it had lots"
- "It was good because the dynamics changed and some bits were faster or slower than others"
- "It sounds futuristic and mysterious"
- "flowed well with different ideas"
- "good ideas"
- "ended well, good structure"

Shooting Schedule...
This is my Shooting Schedule for my music video. The shot numbers relate to the storyboard shot numbers and 20 is a possible extra shot. I have called them shooting sessions, as more than 1 session could be on the same day. Session 5 is my overflow session so that if I need to add any shots, that I think I need after I film the shots in the table, then this is when I film them.
Green Screen Practice...
In this video we tried out green screening and found that the quality really depended on the light and also the background. We tried different lighting arrangements and backgrounds until the quality improved. This will help me to know the best ways to use the green screen for my video. I also watched a green screen (or chroma key) video on youtube explaining the ways to get the best effects on green screen by lighting it well, having no shadows and not standing too close.
Thursday, 15 October 2009
Possible Storyboard Idea...

In my music video I plan to use green screen to blend the shots from one doorway to a different location. I will also try and edit the opening of doors on the beat as well as the cuts. As my track is about 3 minutes I might need to have some longer shots or add more shots in to fit the timing of the music. I might add a 20th shot of a close up of the girl smiling, which matches the spooky end to the track.

Summary of Research...
After the research it shows how important synergy is. All the CD covers, posters and videos I have looked at are clearly linked by graphic logos, fonts and styles/genres. These all help to promote the artist and market their products/tours. The logos are seen in almost all the CD's and posters as a visual clue to the artist's products. The colours and fonts are also seen in the CD's, posters and videos (except Coldplay who's video was more narrative). The videos especially the 'Break' video included the same colours as the CD cover and the promotional poster linking all the aspects of the album as a visual promotion. Little Boots also did this but more with a style than colours, as she seemed to have a 'stars and space' theme which was linked to her CD cover, poster and video. The Klonhertz video was the most difficult to find anything for as the song was a cover, the single wasn't popular and I couldn't find any information for a tour. I only kept the video on as I think it's an interesting video idea and edits on the beat almost all the way throught. I also thought it was a good example of animation and abstract video conventions.
Digi-paks...

Digi-paks are book-like CD/DVD cases. They usually are made out of cardboard with a plastic tray inside to hold the CD/DVD. The digi-pak is often used for CD singles or special edition albums. They were first introduced around the 2000's by MeadWestvaco, who later allowed the name digi-pak to be used worldwide. In recent times, the digi-pak has been made out of recycled cards of even bottles for the inside tray, helping them to be environmentally friendly. Tuesday, 29 September 2009
Target Audience...

The target audience for a music video would generally be who ever likes the genre of the music, or someone who is already a fan of a particluar band. However, if the video is something different, because it's original or abstract in some way, it might appeal to a wider audience. If the band has never been heard of, then the video may promote the band the most, as it can reach a wider audience through today's media technologies e.g. you tube. If one promotion reaches someone then they may search for other products, for example if they see an interesting music video they may like the music (even if it's not something they would normally listen to) and maybe buy a single or album, or even see the band in concert or on tour.

Klonhertz - 'Three Girl Rhumba' Video by Dougal Wilson
The video starts with a shot of a magazine about how to create a 'cut-and-assemble model' pop video. There is then a jump cut into read the title of the magazine. A human hand opens the page and the singer starts as the shot zooms into the models. The models start to assemble themselves and the viewer sees the video will be abstract and unconventional. Even though the video uses puppets there is still the performance aspect. The shots also use editing on the beat when the fingers move, as the paper puppets perform the music and the lights also flash to the beat. There are a lot of shots that quickly zoom into another shot like at the part where the singers head keeps opening and the shot zooms into each head. The scissors also cut to the beat as they chase the paper aeroplane. The mise-en-scene of the world they're in is all made out of paper to keep the idea of a cut-and-assemble model of a pop video, also as numbers are mentioned a lot in the song there are numbers in the background. When the singer divides by 2 there is a 2 and other numbers behind him; also when the hurricane warning there are numbers flying around. As the paper plane crashes at the end the models all fall back into the magazine and the hand closes the page with the beat so the story ends where it started.

Coldplay - 'A Rush of Blood to the Head' Album Cover
This is the album which 'The Scientist' is featured on. The picture shows the portrait of someone made out of what looks like metal filings. As the album is called 'A Rush of Blood to the Head' the picture is missing half on its head. The design is very simple and uses a pale brown colour for the album title and black for the band name. On the back is the bar code at the top centre and the album and band name again underneath it. Then the track listing in the same pale brown colour as the album name. A the very bottom centre is the copyright information also in pale brown. The same font is used throughout.
Coldplay - 'The Scientist' Video by
The Scientist Video Link
The video starts with the singer lying on a mattress. As he starts singing the shot zooms out and then fades into a longer shot of the singer. The shot then pans around his face and in the background a biker is riding backwards and the singer gets up as if the video is played backwards too. The camera circles around the singer in a panning motion, then shows a slow motion of a bike trick, which fades into a medium shot. The next sequence is of the singer walking backwards down a street but singing the lyrics forwards. The shots fade into each other as the singer then jumps backwards over a wall. The shots are all mainly joined by fading into one another. The is also a sequence of a basketball game played backwards so the ball is coming back out of the hoop. Slow-motion is also used as the singer walks backwards across railway tracks, which seems to be on the beat. Then there is a fade to black as the next shot changes location again to a very long shot of the singer walking backwards towards a forest. The shot cuts closer into the forest, as it suddenly gets dark. When its daylight again, the singer puts on his coat and does up the buttons to the beat of the music. At this point the viewer sees an idea of narrative as there is a woman lying on the floor. The medium shot shows the singer getting back into a car and cuts to the wheel and the woman as tiny pieces of glass fly back into the window screen with her body. A log shot and a pan through trees shows the car roll back up the hill, past a truck and shows the woman took off her seat belt to take her coat off. The mise-en-scene throughout suggests at first a street scene with graffiti but the viewers attention is mainly drawn to figure out how the video is going backwards, this makes the video unconventional and interesting to watch.

Three Days Grace Album Poster

Three Days Grace 'Life Starts Now' Album Poster. The poster shows the album cover design. The band logo in its font is at the top and next to it the album name. Near the bottom on the left it advertises the first released single 'Break', which explains the picture of people breaking things. At the bottom there is the release date for the album in a bigger font, so it's seen easily. The colours used in the CD cover are mainly black and pink which are the main colours in the video 'Break',the black underneath the TV's also looks like paint like in the video. This links it to the album cover/video by the colours and the picture.
'Life Starts Now' album cover

The cover shows two people smashing a pile of TVs as crows or ravens, bats, butterflies and snakes come out. The band logo in its font is at the top and next to it the album name. The colours used are pinks, black, greys and purples. The people in the cover also don't have faces they look like they're scribbled out but with eyes. The cover of the people smashing tv's seems to symbolise the first track of the album released 'Break'. The colours and the image are used to link together and promote the album.
On the back the pinky/purple colours are used for the track listing in the same font as the album name and also the information on the poster. Apart from the coloured track text the rest of the picture is in black and grey, this shows the band in the centre at a warehouse type building. The copyright information is on the very right of the case and is virticle at the side.
Three Days Grace - 'Break'
The video starts with a shot of the band's boots walking down a corridor. On the walls are chevron-like arrows in pink, grey, black and white like the colours of the album cover and poster. Then in the same colours a newton's cradle of the same colours. You see shots of the band as they walk to doors that open, again with the same colour code. You see the band members pick up their guitars as the drum beat starts in separate rooms painted in their colour, they band members also wear clothes matching their colour with black army-style boots. The shots are cutting from one room to another on almost every beat until the singer starts. The mise-en-scene in the room is just their instrument, the painted coloured walls and the suits all but the drummer are wearing. There is also a set of silver discs on the wall which shine when they catch the light. There is also a contrast between the bright white room and the dark of the black room which is also helped by lighting mainly from the silver discs on the wall. There are mainly medium and long shots with some slow motion the guitarists. A close up of fans when the walls open and a shot through a fan leading into the chorus of the song. There are some special effects of coloured balls flying around matching the room colour, keeping the video unrealistic and slightly abstract around the performance.
By the time the chorus comes again there is paint flying at the room and the band also the colours but in a different order e.g. the singer's white suit is now covered in pink paint which can be seen in slow motion shots. Shots through the fans reveal the 4 rooms to be joined by fans. Shots continue to cut between rooms on the beat showing more paint and the mess of the rooms, until the singer stops and there is a close up of the newton's cradle. The next shot shows the coloured balls of the cradle follow the band out of the corridor they came in at the start. The band are now all wearing black (without paint).

Little Boots Tour Poster

The poster shows an acoustic show in London. The same font is used on the poster and the single. The poster also looks futuristic and links to space a bit like the CD cover even though other bands are appearing too Little Boots must be the headlining act as the poster matches the style of her album and single covers and also the style of her video 'Remedy'.
'Remedy' single cover
Little Boots - 'Remedy' Video by David Wilson
The Video starts with flashing lights to the beat of the intro the editing also fits with the faster beat and jump cuts as she presses the note on the keyboard matching on acton. The first time we see her she is singing along with the track. The lighting is also very bright around her and she is wearing a futuristic - looking sliver dress. The camera pans a bit and also changes its angle of her to the beat. The next sequence the editing still on the beat adds quick cuts of a Kaleidoscope which shows a close up of her lips while singing. There are also shots of her playing the keyboard also in a Kaleidoscope. When she lies down next to a keyboard she also sings 'Kaleidoscope' in the lyrics. The lighting changes to the beat and contrasts between light and dark. The mise-en-scene of triangles are also used a lot in the video, through the Kaleidoscope, the flashing blue lights, her dress, hair piece and the arrangement of the keyboards. The video also uses reflections through her sliver dress/ hair piece, Kaleidoscope and the mirrored walls in the background. Most of the shots are quite quick to fit to the beat of the song, which is electro-pop.

Preliminary piece Info+++
Today I have finished the editing, including lip-sync and editing on the beat. The whole video now runs from start to finish, as I have filled in the gaps with smaller shots, which actually work on the beat. I have also used transitions to link 2 shots together and overall I think the video looks quite good.

Preliminary piece Info++
We have started the editing of our music video (on a mac) and since it's only 1 minute, we have almost finished. The lip-sync has worked well but the hardest part so far is the editing on the beat. As our shot lengths are changing, at the moment there are some gaps in the order we need to fill. After this, the video should run smoothly and hopefully look good.

Preliminary piece Info+...
Due to time issues we didn't use the nature area but did finish filming.
All we need to do now is edit the film and match it to the music.
We also need to finalise the CD cover design on Coral.

Music Videos research...
Robert Plant & Alison Krauss- Gone Gone Gone
This is the real video for the song we chose. It starts with both the woman and the man walking into the room through shiny silver curtains. The room has disco balls hanging from the ceiling. They walk to the centre of the room, towards each other. The main shot types used are tracking shots, cuts, zooms and pans.
The tracking shots follow the singers as they walk into different rooms. After the disco ball room they walk into a room full of inflatable people. After this room they both walk onto a stage where they sing with a guitarist in the middle of them. There are mostly cuts and pans used to see the people on the stage and the people dancing at the front.
Towards the end there is a mixture of the different sets and different colours, which throughout the characters both wear the same black clothes. Also the only characters seen in the video are the main man and woman and the guitarist, all the other dancers were silhouettes.

David Wilson - We Have Band "You Came Out"
This video uses just the faces of 4 people. Throughout the video the people's faces are painted in different colours and designs. The woman, who seems to be the main character, is painted to look like she is singing without opening her mouth. The shots seen are the frames that each shot has used to be put together, which must have taken a long time. Each shot of each face with paint on has been edited together very fast to create the effect that the face's colours are changing e.g. at one point a man looks like he's crying as blue paint runs down his face. Towards the end the paint runs backwards, as the shots are reversed and the end is the same as the beginning.
Afterlife by Avenged Sevenfold
This video mainly uses the colours black and white and the contrast between, without being shot in black and white. The camera shots are mostly panning and very fast cuts between shots, also editing on the beat. There isn't really a narrative story as such but there is other shots, away from the band set up, which show members doing different things. One running towards the camera against a white background, another with a spider, one dancing, one letting doves fly and one laughing holding a skull, like Shakespeare. All theses seem quite random and not really connected to each other. The camera also pans and fades into another shot of the same set up but the band members are wearing different clothes and the background changes between black and white. Also because the song is called 'Afterlife' the black and white could represent heaven and hell.

CD Covers...

This is a country CD which is similar style to the song we have for our music video. The cover shows the artist Tim McGraw but mainly him in a black tee-shirt and black cowboy hat, which represents the country style. The shot of him may suggest that he is shy, as his hat covers most of his face. The CD title is also a limited edition of his greatest hits, suggesting that he has had many hits already.
