The target audience for a music video would generally be who ever likes the genre of the music, or someone who is already a fan of a particluar band. However, if the video is something different, because it's original or abstract in some way, it might appeal to a wider audience. If the band has never been heard of, then the video may promote the band the most, as it can reach a wider audience through today's media technologies e.g. you tube. If one promotion reaches someone then they may search for other products, for example if they see an interesting music video they may like the music (even if it's not something they would normally listen to) and maybe buy a single or album, or even see the band in concert or on tour.
